John Michael LYON

1947 – 2019

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Mike Lyon on August 2, 2019 after a difficult year of personal loss and illness borne with stoicism and quiet strength. Michael was born in Toronto, Ontario, but after moving to Baie D’Urfé in the 1960s became a proud Quebecker who, with his wife Judy, enthusiastically explored many of the province’s regions. Michael and Judy met as staff members at Beaconsfield High School where Mike’s easy manner and expertise with A/V and his degree in Library Science made him a “go to” person for both staff and students. He was a soft spoken but determined defender of the key role of librarians in schools when budget cutbacks threatened their positions. Mike’s quick wit and contagious laugh turned an ordinary encounter into a bright spot in the day. He loved to explore nature, so a bike ride or ski were often a part of his day, scheduled around an afternoon nap with a cat or two. He particularly enjoyed spending summer evenings with Judy kayaking on Lac St. Louis as members of the Pointe-Claire Canoe Club. Predeceased last autumn by his wife Judy, Michael leaves behind his daughter Anna, sister Joyce Lyon, cousins Ginny and David, nieces Ashley Jane and Kathy, nephews Sandy and Bob and his “aunt in law” Jean Allo. A circle of long-time friends, neighbours and former colleagues will also miss his good company. Michael particularly wished to have Jan Farrell acknowledged for the dedicated and sensitive assistance she provided to Anna and him throughout the past months. Thank you also to the staffs of Le Manoir Kirkland and the West Island Palliative Care Residence. A memorial service will take place at the Cedar Park United Church, 204 Lakeview Avenue, Pointe-Claire on Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. Donations in Mike’s memory to the West Island Palliative Care Residence would be appreciated.
